At the end of the nineteenth century, Louis Wayne, a wayward and aloof illustrator living in London, is forced to take charge of his mother and five sisters after the death of his father, making a living from odd jobs. Obsessed with cats, he captures their grace and depicts them on paper, thanks to which he gets a job at a major metropolitan publishing house. Surrealistic paintings allow him to gain universal love and popularity, better understand his own life, and lead to the acquaintance of his future wife, Emily Richardson.
